Jovan Nicholson is an independent art historian and has curated and written the accompanying catalogues for Art and Life: Ben Nicholson, Winifred Nicholson, Christopher Wood, Alfred Wallis, William Staite Murray 1920-1931; Winifred Nicholson: Liberation of Colour; Winifred Nicholson in Cumberland; Kate Nicholson and Winifred Nicholson; Cumbrian Rag Rugs. He is an expert in Winifred Nicholson and a grandson of Ben and Winifred Nicholson.
His talk will explore the links between the painter George Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle and Winifred Nicholson. George Howard, who lived at Naworth Castle and where Winifred was partially brought up, was Winifred’s grandfather and it was with him that she received her first painting lessons. Her early work has a close relationship with Howard, but in addition she also befriended fellow artists and painted on her extensive travels in much the same way as her grandfather.
